My review in brief

If you’re here, it’s probably because you, too, are being flooded with these new mushroom-based drinks in your Instagram feed. I was first. If you’re wondering whether it works and whether it’s worth it, stay here because I tested the Bonjour Drink brand for you.

Bonjour Drink presents itself as the natural alternative to coffee. After a full week of testing, I have to admit that I’m satisfied with the effects. I thought I’d make it through seven days gritting my teeth, then return to my coffee maker with relief. In reality, I’m still going!

When it comes to energy and focus, the promise is definitely delivered. I felt real effects as early as the next day, with noticeably better mental clarity as well as improved focus and productivity at work. No caffeine withdrawal, no energy crash like I might have feared when I stopped my daily coffees.

The dosage is generous, the lab analyses are accessible…

On the downside, however, I have several comments. First, the taste, quite far from the “indulgent” promise, even if you do get used to it. Then there’s the origin of the ingredients, presented in a way that clearly embellishes reality. And the delivery experience, which is pretty disappointing compared with what’s advertised.

At €44.80 per bag, we expect excellence in every respect. It delivers where it matters most to me (in terms of effects, that is), a little less so on the rest.

Bonjour Drink, what exactly is it?

Bonjour Drink is a French brand founded in 2024. At the helm is Juliette Di Marco, founder and CEO, supported by Raphaël Dary. I couldn’t find any more information about the team and the various positions.

The website remains discreet about the founders’ backgrounds, but by looking a little further, we learn in the press that Juliette Di Marco reportedly worked in fashion before getting started. The idea for Bonjour would have come from a personal realization shared with Raphaël Dary: too much coffee consumption, experienced as burdensome for both digestion and mental clarity.

From that frustration came the desire to create a softer alternative, based on adaptogenic mushrooms

Where most competitors offer their adaptogens in capsules or oils, Bonjour made the bet on a unique product: a drink to prepare as a coffee substitute. This single-product positioning is reflected even in the structure of their website, a one-page site that breaks with the conventions of classic e-commerce.

I admit I had a bit of trouble finding my way around at first, being used to categories and detailed product pages.

A real regret as a curious consumer who cares about getting to know food and supplement brands well: the lack of an “about” page. I would have liked to know more about the brand’s story and the team around Juliette and Raphaël.

Methodology

Before getting into the details of the test, a word about how I went about it. I usually drink 2 to 3 coffees a day. For this test, I decided to go all in: I let my coffee maker sit unused for a full week and replaced it with Bonjour drinks, at a rate of 2 to 3 cups a day, as the brand recommends.

The goal was to put myself in real-life conditions like someone who would want to replace their everyday coffee with this alternative.

I also wanted to taste the entire range rather than limiting myself to just one flavor, so I could get a complete view of the product. I therefore tested the seven varieties: Cacao, Indulgent Chocolate, Hazelnut Chocolate, Original, Decaf Coffee, Rooibos Chai, and Chamomile.

As for preparation, I followed the brand’s instructions to the letter: one scoop of powder, hot water or milk, then 2 to 3 turns of the milk frother (both accessories were included with my order).

So I was in good conditions to analyze the brand in a thorough, long-term way. To structure my review, I based it on 6 criteria to evaluate:

  • Composition: dosage, quality, and clarity of the ingredients
  • Traceability: origin of raw materials, transparency about testing
  • Brand: reputation, presence, customer service
  • Pack: delivery, packaging, ease of preparation
  • Enjoyment: taste, smell, tasting experience
  • Effectiveness: perceived effects in relation to the promised benefits

1. Composition ★★★★ 5/5

Bonjour highlights an ultra-concentrated formula: 2700mg of extracts per cup, combining 5 plants and mushrooms, 6 vitamins and minerals, and fiber. Looking at the details, we find 750mg of lion’s mane, 750mg of chaga, 750mg of cordyceps, 300mg of mallow, and 150mg of ginseng.

Out of curiosity, I went to compare it with the competitors: Bonjour’s dosage is generous, above most other brands.

The range includes seven flavors, almost all built around the same active ingredients except for the “Chamomile” and “Bonjour Kids” versions. Some contain a small dose of caffeine (35mg for the Original and the Coffee).

The Camomille version has a different composition: it does not include the usual mushroom trio, but 600 mg of reishi with camomile, green tea, passionflower, turmeric and green anise.

The “Bonjour Kids” version is for children ages 3 and up. Vitamins and minerals only, with no mushrooms or adaptogenic plants, chocolate-hazelnut flavor, at €24 per sachet. A kind of luxury Nesquik.

My real reservation: the benefits of the mushrooms are not well explained on the site. The brand details the virtues of ginseng or fiber, ingredients that I think you and I already know, but remains fairly vague about lion’s mane, chaga or cordyceps.

Too bad, because that is precisely why we come for them. I like understanding what I’m drinking and what the ingredients are for; here it’s a bit unclear.

2. Traceability ★★★ 3/5

Here’s where it gets tricky! On the homepage, Bonjour says: “Natural formula, made in France, based on French extracts of organic plants and mushrooms” and “Product & formulated in France”. Lion’s mane, chaga, and cordyceps are presented there as French organic extracts.

Except that when reading their FAQ, I came across something else:

  • Lion’s mane: France
  • Chaga: Finland
  • Cordyceps: Asia
  • Mallow: France
  • Ginseng: Asia

In other words, of the three “star” mushrooms, only Lion’s Mane is actually French. So we’re talking about French processing, not French ingredients as the homepage suggests.

The distinction between “French extracts” and “extracts processed in France” is huge for consumers.

However, where Bonjour redeems itself is with the analyses. All of the laboratory’s Phytocontrol analyses are freely accessible: allergens, nutritional values, pesticides, heavy metals. The brand provides a Google Drive containing all of the analyses.

Likewise, a Google Sheet bringing together all the studies on the active ingredients and their benefits is available. I didn’t take the time to go through all the studies to verify how solid they are, but I’d never seen anything so solid on that front. It’s a real sign of seriousness.

So in terms of traceability, it’s the two extremes: misleading communication about the origin but exemplary transparency about quality.

3. Rated ★★★★ 5/5

In just under two years since launching, Bonjour has seen impressive growth. The brand claims a presence in more than 3,000 pharmacies in France, remarkable for a company founded in 2024.

On social media, you couldn’t have missed it. The brand is everywhere and has more than 116,000 followers on Instagram.

When it comes to customer reputation, the numbers are solid. More than 20,000 reviews on Trustpilot for an average of 4.8/5, and statistics displayed on the site: 95% of customers satisfied with the taste, 92% who feel benefits, 98% very satisfied. The brand has managed to make its way into the cups of many French people in record time.

Customer service is said to be available 7 days a week, but by email only. I couldn’t find any phone number.

Finally, one thing I think is really smart: the 60-day money-back guarantee. If the taste doesn’t suit you, all you have to do is write in and you’ll be refunded. With a product at this price, and a drink with such a distinctive adaptogenic mushroom taste, it’s a convincing argument!

4. Pack ★★★☆☆ 3/5

Let’s start with the sore point: delivery. The website advertises delivery within 48 hours, free of charge. I placed my order on July 1 and received my package on the 17th. That’s a long way from being on time.

After about ten days of waiting, I ended up contacting the brand by email. And here, they deserve credit: the reply came very quickly. I was told it was a restocking issue, with production times being longer than usual. The explanation is honest and customer service was responsive, which matters.

The package finally arrives. The packaging is very basic: a cardboard box, a bit of padding, and that’s it. It’s minimalistic, not to say rudimentary. For a brand selling a wellness ritual at this price, that’s a bit disappointing.

I found the sachets easy to reseal properly, which is important for a product you open three times a day.

A pleasant surprise: the order included a milk frother and a measuring spoon. That’s exactly what you need to prepare the drink properly. A practical touch that partly makes up for the sparse packaging.

As for preparation, however, I have no complaints. One spoonful, hot water or milk, 2-3 turns of the frother, and it’s ready. The animated image tutorial on the website is clear, and I got it right the first time, without any lumps.

It’s simple, quick, it made it easy for me to fit into my routine.

5. Pleasure ★★★☆☆ 3/5

First morning without coffee. I chose the Gourmet Chocolate flavor to kick things off.

The smell is very comforting and indulgent, like hot chocolate. On the plus side, my enthusiasm is building.

But it fades quickly after the first sip. It’s drinkable, but nothing like hot chocolate. What I was most worried about was tasting the mushroom, which would have disgusted me. On that front, it’s very subtle and goes down easily.

I tried the other flavors right after, and the conclusion is the same: very indulgent on the nose, but there is always an earthy, vegetal taste. I ended up adding a little honey to make it more enjoyable to drink. It’s the kind of drink I’m not necessarily going to have for pleasure, but for its effects.

The site says that 95% of customers like the taste. Tastes are subjective, and I’m not disputing that figure, but don’t expect the nostalgic pleasure of a gourmet drink, or you may be disappointed.

That said, over the days I got used to the taste. If the first cup throws you off a bit, give it a few days, and you may get used to it.

My favorite flavors after tasting them all: Cacao, Gourmet Chocolate, and Hazelnut Chocolate. These are the ones where the indulgent side comes through best and where the vegetal side is the most subtle.

One exception, though: the Chamomile version. I just didn’t like it at all.

6. Effectiveness ★★★★ 5/5

This is the crux of the matter and the only real reason to pay this price. Let’s see what the brand promises, then what I actually found.

Please note, this criterion is very personal, and the effects felt are specific to each person, depending on their issue, lifestyle, and other personal factors.

Bonjour announces five benefits in one ritual : steady energy without spikes or crashes, better mental clarity / concentration, digestive comfort and reduced cravings, stronger natural defenses, and peaceful nights.

Each promise is tied to a specific active ingredient; the brand claims to rely on more than 20,000 scientific studies.

Regarding energy, I was able to appreciate the effects firsthand. When I started the test, I drank my first cup and went to the gym. Without caffeine in my bloodstream, for the first time that has ever happened to me. I was worried I’d hit a slump. But the workout went well and I had the energy I needed to make it through.

Throughout the week, the observation was confirmed: significantly fewer energy crashes than with coffee, especially that famous afternoon slump that makes you fall into procrastination. I kept a much more stable level from morning to night.

Now, as for mental clarity. It’s the effect I appreciated the most. From the second day on, I feel calmer, with clearer thoughts. My concentration is better, I organize myself more easily at work, and I no longer have the spikes of anxiety and dread that I could sometimes have.

Is it quitting coffee, the effect of Bonjour, or a combination of the two? Honestly, I can’t say for sure. But the result is there, and it is clear enough for me to see myself continuing this routine after the test ends.

As for sleep, however, the Chamomile version did not convince me. I tried the drink in the evening and did not notice any noticeable effect on my night. But I already have good sleep to begin with.

And as for immunity, I prefer to be honest: it’s impossible to assess over seven days!
