The efficacy of ornithine on sports performance is studied with promising results. A study on healthy volunteers indicates that taking 1 g of ornithine hydrochloride twice daily for 7 days, followed by 3 g before a cycling test, reduced fatigue compared to a placebo. Other studies show that a single dose of 0.1 g/kg can increase peak speed in cycling among active young men without affecting exercise duration or maximum oxygen consumption. Additionally, in young weightlifters, daily intake of 1 g of ornithine with 1 g of arginine for 30 to 35 days increased lean body mass, strength, and peak anaerobic power compared to placebo.

Although ornithine did not improve skin hydration in a small study on adults with dry skin, daily intake of a drink containing ornithine showed an improvement in skin elasticity and a reduction in water loss compared to placebo.
