L-Ornithine is a non-essential amino acid, which means it does not need to be obtained from the diet because the body can synthesize it. It plays a key role in the urea cycle, where it helps remove excess nitrogen during the breakdown of arginine by the enzyme arginase. During this cycle, ornithine is recycled into citrulline and eventually into arginine, thereby facilitating the processing of nitrogenous waste. Although ornithine does not directly participate in protein synthesis, it influences several other important biological processes. Research has suggested that ornithine may stimulate growth hormone production via a mechanism that could potentially help increase muscle mass. The effectiveness of ornithine on sports performance has been studied with promising results. nnOne study in healthy volunteers indicates that taking 1 g of ornithine hydrochloride twice daily for 7 days, followed by 3 g before a cycling test, reduced fatigue compared with a placebo. nnOther studies show that a single dose of 0.1 g/kg can increase peak cycling speed in young active men without affecting exercise duration or maximal oxygen consumption. nnAdditionally, in young weightlifters, daily intake of 1 g ornithine with 1 g arginine for 30 to 35 days increased lean body mass, strength, and peak anaerobic power compared with placebo.nn

Although ornithine did not improve skin hydration in a small study of adults with dry skin, daily intake of a beverage containing ornithine showed an improvement in skin elasticity and a reduction in transepidermal water loss compared with placebo. Ornithine may help improve skin elasticity and reduce water loss, likely by supporting collagen synthesis and enhancing the skin's barrier functions. Indeed, ornithine is a precursor in the synthesis of polyamines and proline, which are necessary for collagen synthesis and wound repair.
