Nigella, a plant that strengthens and purifies hair

What is nigella oil?

Nigella is a plant native to Asia, related to the anemone. Its nickname, “black cumin”, comes from the culinary use of its black seeds. Their flavor is quite strong and pungent. In India, black cumin is often used as a spice to enhance curries or chutneys, for example.

But these seeds are not only a culinary ingredient; they are also used for therapeutic purposes because of their many virtues. Nigella oil is said to soothe skin problems like acne. But it is also a precious ally for hair health! The oil is obtained after grinding and pressing the seeds.

Like spirulina or fenugreek oil, nigella oil has benefits for hair health. This oil shows strong antioxidant activity, which protects the body against the action of free radicals. One of them, thymoquinone, has an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial role, as highlighted by this study. Nigella oil would therefore be a natural remedy to soothe scalp conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Among the plant’s other components are omega-6 and omega-9. This content in fatty acids, coupled with its cleansing action, makes it particularly useful for relieving scalp problems.

Nigella oil could have a beneficial effect on hair loss. This study shows that a plant-based nigella oil appeared to reduce participants’ hair loss by three quarters.

This other study highlights the effect of a preparation based on black seed oil on the telogen effluvium. It is a temporary hair loss most often resulting from a period of intense stress. Larger-scale studies are expected to confirm this effect.

Black seed oil can be recommended for psoriasis, as shown by this study. This inflammatory skin condition can affect the scalp and present as itching and an increase in dandruff. This other study highlights its potential effect on atopic eczema.
