What are the benefits of chia seeds ?
Seeds from Mexico
The chia seeds are harvested from the sage Salvia hispanica, an herbaceous plant native to Mexico. The consumption of these small marbled seeds dates back to pre-Columbian civilizations. Over time, the Toltecs, the Maya and then the Aztecs incorporated chia seeds into their staple diet because of their nutritional properties.
Even today, they are mostly grown in Central America and South America (Peru, Bolivia, Mexico…). They are then sold whole, ground or as vegetable oil to be consumed as is or incorporated into recipes.

Les graines de chia sont des super-aliments particulièrement intéressants. Elles sont riches en oméga-3, en minéraux et en antioxydants protecteurs.
Elles sont aussi riches en fibres dites mucilagineuses, qui favorisent un bon transit intestinal.
Improve digestion and help with weight loss
Today, chia seeds are among the most well-known superfoods for optimizing bowel transit or losing weight. Indeed, they can contain up to 40% fiber! An ideal composition for relieving intestinal disorders, boosting microbiota health and nourishing beneficial bacteria as shown by this study.
Like flax seeds or psyllium, chia seeds are mucilaginous. They are surrounded by a plant substance called mucilage, made up of polysaccharides. It swells and transforms into a viscous gel in the stomach. This gel can absorb up to 10 times its weight in water, thus facilitating bowel transit and the elimination of waste from the body.
Consuming chia seeds is also useful for losing weight and supporting weight loss. Thanks to the viscous gel formed in the stomach, they increase the feeling of satiety and act as a natural appetite suppressant. As shown by this study, chia seeds limit snacking between meals, in addition to supporting digestive health.
They are also known for sedative and anti-stress properties, antioxidant activity and beneficial effects on bone health. They are also an excellent source of omega-3s, protein (with 9 essential amino acids) and calcium.

Where to buy chia seeds?
Health food stores
Most brick-and-mortar organic stores offer chia seeds grown according to organic farming standards, without chemicals. Stores such as Biocoop, La Vie Claire, L’eau Vive and Satoriz offer organic chia seeds.
Pharmacies and drugstores
You can find chia seeds in pharmacies and drugstores that have a section « superfoods ». The brands Superdiet and Herbesan offer them and they are often sold in pharmacies.
Specialized physical stores
To find chia seeds, visit specialty superfood stores or shops of dietary products. Some large retail chains (such as Super U, Auchan or E-Leclerc) also have a « superfoods » section where you can buy chia seeds.
Specialized online shops and e-commerce
The internet offers a wide selection of chia seeds. You can buy them from online retailers specializing in organic products such as Greenweez, Naturalia or Etik’&Bio. To save money, favor subscription-based organic online stores like La Fourche or Aurore Market.
Producers
France has an increasing number of chia seed producers, grouped within the Filière chia de France. Altogether, it includes 150 farmers/producers and 13 partner cooperatives where you can get local chia seeds!

In what form ?
Whole
Chia seeds are most often offered whole. They are simply harvested, dried and then packaged as-is, in a sachet. This is therefore a minimally processed form that has retained the seed’s original nutrients.
Whole chia seeds are simply eaten soaked in water. But if you don’t like their gelatinous texture, you can also sprinkle them on your salads, cereals, or incorporate them into delicious and original recipes like the famous chia pudding.
Powdered
After harvest, chia seeds can be ground into a fine powder. Easy to consume, the powder simply mixes into fruit juice, smoothies, milkshakes or plant-based milk. It can also replace eggs in a recipe.
As shown by this study, the ground chia seeds appear to provide more alpha-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid (omega-3s) compared with whole chia seeds.
Oil
Chia seed oil is a form that’s harder to find. It is used in both cosmetics and cooking, for seasoning cold dishes. As shown by this study, chia seed oil from Mexico is preferable because it is very rich in fatty acids.
What criteria should be considered ?
1. Variety
Chia seeds can be white or black depending on the season and the stage of harvest. But there are no significant differences in nutritional values. Some people note a stronger flavor in black chia seeds.
2. Production method
Preferably choose chia seeds grown organically. This will spare you pesticide residues in the finished product. Also, prefer seeds from fair-trade supply chains that guarantee a fair income for local producers.

3. Composition
Whether it’s whole seeds, powder, or chia seed oil, the product should be 100% natural. It should not contain additives or preservatives.
4. Origin
Choose chia seeds originating from South or Central America (Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico…). They are generally of high quality and still grown in an artisanal way.
What is their price ?
You should expect between €8 and €10 for 500 g of whole organic chia seeds.
Organic chia seed powder is sold for around €6 for 200 g.
Finally, plan on about €9 for 30 ml of chia seed oil.

- Variété : choose between white or black chia seeds.

- Composition : choose a natural product, without additives or preservatives.
- Geographical origin : choose chia seeds from South or Central America.
