What are the benefits of moringa ?

Highly nutritious leaves

The moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a tropical tree native to India and Pakistan. Recognized in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, it helps treat many ailments (fever, diabetes, skin problems…) and strengthen the immune system. These properties have earned it the nickname “tree of life” or “miracle tree”. It grows very quickly and is resistant to pests and diseases.

While all parts of the moringa are edible, it is primarily the leaves that are prized in herbal medicine. They can be used fresh but are often sold dehydrated, in capsules, or in powder form.

Moringa leaves contain a large number of nutrients. They include vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, C…), minerals and trace elements (calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese…) as well as essential amino acids and antioxidant compounds.

Its leaves are so nutritious that they are used to combat malnutrition worldwide.

An antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypoglycemic action

Moringa benefits
Moringa leaves, flowers, capsules and powder
  • Recent studies on this food highlight a powerful antioxidant and protective action. Like the leaves of nettle, those of moringa contain flavonoids, vitamin C and chlorophyll. These compounds fight free radicals and cellular aging.
  • Its leaves help reduce inflammation. They contain organic molecules called isothiocyanates and quercetin that regulate the inflammatory process. Moringa inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory molecules and helps relieve joint pain related to arthritis.
  • Finally, thanks to its isothiocyanates, moringa has a hypoglycemic effect as shown by this study. In the context of type 2 diabetes, it lowers blood sugar levels and improves insulin resistance.

Where to buy moringa ?

Organic stores

Organic stores, such as Naturalia or Biocoop, offer organically grown moringa. This guarantees you a product without pesticide residues, non-GMO and non-irradiated. It is generally sold in capsules or as leaf powder.

Pharmacies and parapharmacies

Turn to pharmacies and parapharmacies that have a “phytotherapy” section, where you can also find products combining moringa with other plants such as maca or turmeric.

Specialized physical stores

You can also visit certain specialized retailers: dietary supplement resellers, stores selling dietary products, herbalist shops… It is generally offered there in the form of capsules, powder or dried leaves.

Specialized online stores and e-commerce

Many shops and online retailers sell moringa. If you want to buy organic, we recommend organic-focused e-commerce stores such as Kazidomi or La Fourche. You can also consider resellers like amOseeds and laboratories like Nutrimea.

Producers

India, the Philippines and Indonesia cultivate the majority of moringa. It is also found in Taiwan, Central America and Africa. If you can, favor a tree grown by small-scale producers. Some brands source directly from local cooperatives to support their work.

Moringa powder has a slightly spicy taste

In what form ?

In capsules and tablets

Moringa capsules and tablets are a good way to enjoy its benefits. Easy to find, this form also has the advantage of being convenient and quick to take. Finally, it is tasteless and will suit those who do not appreciate the slightly peppery flavor of the powder.

In powder form

The powder is certainly the best form. It is obtained by drying, grinding and then sifting the leaves. It has a fairly pronounced taste, slightly peppery and tangy. Very concentrated in nutrients, moringa powder is easy to consume. You can add it to juices, smoothies and health drinks, sprinkle it over your dishes and use it in baking.

Dried leaves

Although rarer, it is also possible to find dried moringa leaves. Once harvested, they are simply dehydrated. By losing a large part of their water, they become concentrated in nutrients. In this form, the leaves can be used to make herbal teas and infusions.

What criteria should you consider ?

1. The variety

The Moringa genus includes several species of trees. The best known are the Moringa oleifera, from India, and the Moringa stenopetala, native to Africa. The latter also has medicinal properties but its leaves contain fewer nutrients. Therefore favor the “oleifera” variety, which is more interesting from a nutritional point of view.

2. Cultivation method

Ideally, moringa should be grown organically, without chemicals. This will guarantee a product free of pesticide residues and heavy metals, not irradiated and non-GMO. This type of farming also helps preserve the environment.

3. The composition

The product’s composition should be as natural as possible. Capsules should not contain excipients, preservatives, or colorants. Also favor vegetable capsules. It is also important that the moringa powder be 100 % pure and natural.

4. The origin

India is the world’s leading producer of moringa. But its expanding cultivation sometimes leads to excesses and can harm production quality. Also favor moringa grown artisanally and/or from fair-trade supply chains. Closer to home, producers are also found in North Africa and Spain.

5. The price

Expect between €12 and €20 for 120 organic moringa capsules.

Organic moringa leaf powder is sold at around €10 per 100 g.

Finally, 100 g of dried leaves cost around €10.

To summarize

To be sure you’re choosing quality moringa, check:

  1. The variety : choose the Moringa Oleifera variety, the richest in nutrients ;
  2. Growing method : opt for moringa grown organically and in an artisanal way ;
  3. Composition : the product should be organic and/or natural, without additives and without preservatives. The powder must be 100% pure and natural ;
  4. The price : it should be between 12€ and 20€ for 120 moringa capsules and around 10€ for 100 g of powder or dried leaves.
