Qu’est-ce que le sélénium ?

A trace element with multiple functions

Selenium is a trace element and more precisely a mineral salt, like zinc, iron and magnesium.

This means that it is present in small amounts in the body. Discovered in 1817, it was only in the 1950s that interest in its properties grew, notably its antioxidant action.

Selenium is involved in many biological functions. It notably strengthens the immune system, protecting cells and tissues. A powerful antioxidant, it fights free radicals and prevents the damage they cause.

It also supports the proper functioning of the thyroid and is one of the components of glutathione peroxidase, a cellular antioxidant.

Where can it be found in the diet?

In the diet, it is notably found in meat, offal, seafood and oilseeds.

With 178 µg per 100 g, the Brazil nuts are among the best sources of selenium. A single nut is enough to cover daily needs (60 to 70 µg/day for men and 20 to 50 µg/day for women).

It can also be taken as a dietary supplement.

What are its benefits for hair?

It strengthens the hair fiber

This trace element has an effect on hair quality. Thus, it strengthens and revitalizes the hair fiber. Furthermore, brittle hair and/or significant hair loss can be a sign of selenium deficiency.

It may promote hair growth and help purify the scalp

It is often found in hair supplements, combined with zinc, biotin (vitamin B8) or vitamin B6, for its supposed effect on hair growth.

Additionally, thanks to its antioxidant action, it protects against free radicals that promote hair loss.

By rebalancing the scalp microbiome, it prevents various hair problems. It can help prevent or eliminate dandruff, for example.

As such, it is often found in hair products in the form of selenium sulfide, a compound of sulfur and selenium.

However, more studies are still needed to prove these properties.
