What is aloe vera?

Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Miller) is a succulent plant of the Liliaceae family. It is best known for its cosmetic uses, for skin and hair care.

Its gel, extracted from fresh leaves, has an exceptional composition.

On the one hand, it is made up of 99 % water, which makes it an excellent moisturizing agent.

On the other hand, it contains various vitamins (A, B, C, E) and a wide range of minerals and trace elements (calcium, zinc, potassium…). All of these nutrients contribute to healthy hair.

What are its benefits for hair?

It hydrates the hair shaft

Thanks to its high water content, aloe vera is one of the best natural moisturizing agents. Hydration is essential for keeping hair soft and shiny, well protected and easy to style.

When used as a treatment, it penetrates the hair fiber and addresses the hair’s moisture needs.

It is particularly beneficial for curly or coily hair. These hair types are generally drier and prone to dehydration.

Finally, aloe vera is also a humectant, meaning it can retain water within the hair fiber. This helps maintain a good level of hydration.

It promotes hair growth

Aloe vera acts in various ways on hair growth.

For one thing, it stimulates microcirculation and oxygenation of the scalp. The hair bulbs, which are responsible for new hair, are also better nourished. This effect is explained, among other things, by its high content of vitamin E (84 mg/100 g).

On the other hand, it strengthens the hair fiber, prevents breakage and slows down hair loss. Its vitamins help hair grow faster and stronger.

It soothes the scalp

Applied to the scalp, aloe vera has a soothing effect. Thus, it relieves irritations and itching.

It is also recommended for dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis, which manifests as redness, patches and flakes.

During this study, the application of an aloe vera–based emulsion helped relieve seborrheic dermatitis.

It regulates sebum production

Aloe vera has beneficial effects on sebum production on the scalp. It can regulate secretion by the sebaceous glands, making it an ideal ally for oily hair.

Moreover, as shown in this study, it has antibacterial properties. It cleanses and purifies the scalp.

Precautions for use and recommendations

Aloe vera is generally well tolerated by the scalp. However, it can cause allergic reactions.

Before the first application, first perform a skin patch test to detect any allergic reaction.

How to apply it to your hair?

Massage into the scalp

You can apply it by massaging it directly onto the scalp. This massage will be very soothing in case of itching or irritation. It helps quickly relieve discomfort.

Pour aloe vera gel onto the tips of your fingers and apply it over the entire scalp.

Leave on for 1 hour, under a towel or a hair treatment cap. Rinse and use your regular shampoo.

Repeat this massage 2 times a week.

In your shampoo

You can also add it to your shampoo for an extra moisturizing effect.

Use 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel for 100 mL of shampoo.

As a hair mask

Aloe vera is excellent as a hair mask. You can use it pure or combined with other natural ingredients : vegetable oils (coconut, castor, jojoba…), apple cider vinegar, yogurt, lemon juice, shea butter…

Apply the mask before shampooing. Leave on for 1 hour before rinsing and washing your hair.

Repeat this mask twice a week.

As a hair serum

Finally, you can use it as a hair serum on the lengths and ends. In this case, it helps hydrate and style the hair. It also helps tame and define curls.

Warm a small dollop of gel of aloe vera in your hands then apply to dry hair.
