Detoxification: the most effective dietary supplements

Mis à jour le

Detoxification is a natural process that allows our body to eliminate unwanted substances, called xenobiotics. These substances, originating from metabolism or the environment (toxins, medications, pesticides), are mainly processed by the liver through complex enzymatic mechanisms.

Detoxification Phases

The detoxification process revolves around three main phases: • Phase I - Toxin transformation Enzymes, primarily cytochrome P450 enzymes, transform fat-soluble toxins into more water-soluble compounds. These modifications prepare the toxins for the next steps but can also temporarily make them more reactive. • Phase II - Conjugation Metabolites from phase I are combined with molecules such as glutathione or sulfate, thus neutralizing their toxicity and increasing their solubility for easier elimination. • Phase III - Transport and elimination Final products are transported out of cells via specific proteins and eliminated by the kidneys (urine) or the intestines (bile). Although the liver is the central organ of detoxification, the kidneys, intestines, lungs and skin actively participate in this process as excretory organs.

Supporting Detoxification

Several factors can influence the effectiveness of detoxification, including genetics, diet, age and overall health. For example, a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbages) can stimulate the activity of phase II enzymes. In addition, certain antioxidants, such as vitamin C and glutathione, protect the body against the oxidative effects of transformed toxins. To effectively support the natural detoxification process, it is recommended to adopt practices such as: • Maintain a balanced and varied diet, rich in fiber, vitamins (especially B-group vitamins) and minerals. • Reduce exposure to toxins by avoiding harmful chemicals in the home environment (such as certain cleaning products). • Include antioxidants to combat oxidative stress, prioritizing fruits, vegetables and dietary supplements if necessary.

Tips for a Successful Detox Program

For a boost in vitality, a well-run detox program should include: Checking for deficiencies Vitamins (notably B6, B9, B12) and minerals (magnesium, zinc) are essential for enzymatic detoxification. In case of deficiency, the body’s ability to eliminate toxins is reduced, leading to fatigue and a slowed metabolism. Activation of the elimination organs The elimination organs, also called "body filters", include the liver, intestines, kidneys, lungs and skin. These organs play a key role in removing toxins. A good practice is to drink low-mineral water (less than 150 mg/L) to support renal elimination, help the liver and intestines with herbal infusions such as black radish, artichoke or milk thistle, promote elimination through the skin by using a sauna or warm baths, and breathe deeply to activate the lungs. A temporary dietary restriction The detox program starts by easing digestion to allow the body to focus on eliminating toxins: a two- to three-day fast, accompanied by low-mineral water, helps reduce the toxic load, and for those who cannot fast, opt for a light diet based on fruits, vegetables, and broths, while avoiding processed foods, sugars and saturated fats.
