Vervain: benefits, dosage, contraindications

Mis à jour le

Common vervain belongs to the family Verbenaceae. This perennial plant, native to temperate regions, measures between 40 and 80 cm. The aerial parts, harvested during flowering, are used in herbal medicine. Among its main constituents are iridoids such as verbenaline and hastatoside, known for their soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. The plant is also rich in polyphenols, notably verbascoside, which is highly concentrated and plays a crucial role as an antioxidant. The flavonoids include apigenin and artemetin. Finally, the presence of triterpenes and steroids is noted, such as ursolic acid and beta-sitosterol. Historically, vervain was considered a sacred plant in Europe, its name possibly derived from Old Celtic. It was traditionally used for a multitude of ailments, notably cramps, fatigue, nervous disorders, as well as digestive problems. Despite its varied traditional uses, Commission E has deemed its use not recommended due to insufficient evidence of its effectiveness.

Cough
✪✪✪✪

Vervain is traditionally used to relieve cough, notably due to its expectorant and antitussive properties. By facilitating the expulsion of mucus, it helps clear the airways, thereby providing relief in cases of persistent cough.

Properties

Anti-inflammatory

full-leafempty-leafempty-leafempty-leaf

Vervain exhibits anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties both for internal and external use. Extracts concentrated in flavonoids also relieve gastrointestinal inflammation.

Hormone metabolism

full-leafempty-leafempty-leafempty-leaf

Vervain shows a moderate antithyroid effect but does not seem to directly influence thyroid hormonal patterns. However, it may slightly inhibit progesterone and estrogen receptors. It also influences LH release and has uterine-stimulating properties, potentially causing an abortifacient effect.

Neurological

full-leafempty-leafempty-leafempty-leaf

Vervain (Verbena officinalis) exerts a mild parasympathomimetic action, subtly modulating the body's responses. At low doses, verbenine increases sympathetic nervous system activity, which controls "fight-or-flight" reactions. At higher doses, it may reduce this activity.
