The benefits of hemp flour

Hemp flour: what is it ?

Le chanvre (Cannabis sativa) est une plante originaire d’Asie centrale. Cultivé depuis des siècles, il est surtout connu pour ses graines comestibles appelées « chènevis ».

Once harvested, they can be eaten raw, cooked, or pressed to extract a vegetable oil: the precious hemp oil. But the seeds are also used to make a naturally gluten-free flour.

Lorsqu’elles sont pressées et débarrassées de leur huile, elles laissent un résidu appelé « tourteau ». Ce dernier est ensuite séché, moulu puis tamisé pour obtenir une farine alimentaire.

It is distinguished by a beautiful green color, a vegetal aroma and a nutty taste. It has many uses in cooking and is ideal for a nutritious, gluten-free diet.

The benefits of hemp seeds

As shown by this review, hemp seeds contain valuable nutrients that are also found in the flour. With about 26 g per 100 g, they are an excellent source of plant proteins.

They contain 20 amino acids , including the 8 essential to the body. They are particularly rich in cystine, methionine and arginine, which contribute to many biological functions.

They also contain fiber (4 g per 100 g) as well as vitamins (A, B, C, E), minerals and trace elements (calcium, sodium, iron…).

Sans oublier les acides gras essentiels (oméga-3-6-9) présents en grande quantité. Ainsi, ces graines sont idéales pour prévenir les carences dans le cadre d’un régime flexitarien, végétarien ou végan.

How to choose your hemp flour ?

Favor organic, local farming

We recommend choosing an organic hemp flour to avoid residues of chemical products and pesticides. Especially since the press cake used in its production is made from the outer hull of the seeds.

La certification biologique vous garantit aussi une farine 100 % naturelle, sans additifs ni conservateurs.

It is possible to find flour made from seeds grown in France. Indeed, more and more French producers are taking up the cultivation of Cannabis sativa. If you can, favor these local supply chains when buying your hemp flour.

Other quality criteria

Ideally, choose flour milled on a stone mill. This allows for a finer texture. It also has nutritional advantages compared to flour milled industrially.

If you need to follow a strict gluten-free diet, check that the flour does not contain traces of gluten due to cross-contamination. Indeed, hemp is often grown in rotation with cereals such as wheat.

How to use hemp flour ?

In the kitchen

This flour has a slightly caramelized flavor and a delicate hazelnut taste. It is ideal for making pasta, cakes, cookies, pastries, and homemade breads. It adds moistness and a unique green tint.

Furthermore, as shown by this study, adding hemp flour to your preparations helps improve their nutritional profile.

It is not used alone but mixed with other gluten-free flours such as buckwheat or rice flour. It should be added at a level of 5% to 25%. Then work your dough as usual.

You can also use it to make nutritious snacks and energy balls. It pairs very well with hemp seeds, chia seeds, dates, coconut, or cocoa. Feel free to add a teaspoon of the flour to your smoothie or to your morning porridge.

Finally, like carob flour, it helps thicken soups or sauces.
