Glutathione is one of the most powerful antioxidant proteins in the human body. It can be produced naturally by the liver from three amino acids: glycine, cysteine, and glutamic acid.

Its main role? To fight the effects of free radicals. It also supports the activity of other antioxidants like vitamins C and E.

In the diet, it is found in certain fruits and vegetables: asparagus, avocado, bell pepper. Lean meats and certain spices can also promote its production in the body.

Its antioxidant action, often called ‘anti-rust,’ would play a role in delaying cellular aging, which is at the origin of many diseases: cancer, degenerative diseases, and cardiovascular diseases.

Glutathione is also a hepatoprotective agent, helping the liver eliminate pollutants, heavy metals, and pesticides. Finally, it is credited with benefits for immunity, fat burning, and anti-inflammatory processes.

Side effects to investigate

The hindsight to analyze glutathione’s side effects is not yet sufficient.

In rare cases, bloating and stomach cramps have been reported during supplementation. Further studies are needed to investigate the issue.

However, some studies report that possible allergies and irritability to the components should be considered.

Precautions for use

The glutathione dosage to take has not yet been scientifically established. It would depend on various factors and would vary greatly between individuals.

In general, it is estimated that a minimum dose of 300 mg per day is required, and that the maximum dose may reach 600 mg for the most serious conditions. It is not recommended to take a higher dose.

For a dose above 400 mg, and in the context of a medical condition, please discuss it with your doctor.

Treatment courses generally last 3 months, and can extend to 6 months in certain specific cases.

As for taking it, glutathione should be consumed with a meal, combined with vitamin C and other trace elements (zinc, iron, selenium) if possible, to strengthen its effect.

What are the contraindications?

Currently, taking glutathione is not contraindicated. However, studies on pregnancy are limited. Therefore, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is recommended to discuss it with your doctor before starting any treatment course.

On the other hand, studies have shown that a low glutathione level during pregnancy may increase the risk of infections.

No drug interactions are currently known.

Glutathione does not present a danger.

Currently, scientific studies have shown no harm regarding the use of glutathione.

However, I recommend not exceeding the doses prescribed by the manufacturer, to inform your treating physician before any dosage above 400 mg or when taking medication, and not to consume it for a period longer than 3 months without medical advice.
