What is D-mannose ?

D-mannose is a simple sugar (monosaccharide) whose structure is similar to that of glucose.

The body naturally secretes it in small amounts. It lines the walls of the urinary tract. It is found notably in the bladder and urethra.

This substance’s main function is to protect the urinary tract from pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli.

To do this, it has receptors that « attract » bacteria. Instead of attaching to the bladder walls, they are eliminated via the urine.

D-mannose is commonly recommended in the management of urinary tract infections. It is used for treatment and prevention of cystitis and other lower urinary tract infections (LUTIs): cystitis, urethritis, burning during urination…

It constitutes an alternative to antibiotics or can be used as a supplement, without affecting their effectiveness.

What are its benefits?

It treats cystitis

Acute cystitis is a urinary infection localized in the bladder. In most cases, it is caused by harmful bacteria such as Escherichia coli.

They attach to the bladder wall and multiply. They then cause burning sensations and pain when urinating.

D-mannose helps treat cystitis and eliminate these bacteria. It also improves symptoms.

On the one hand, it exerts an anti-adhesion effect by preventing bacteria from attaching to the bladder walls (urinary epithelium). It also dislodges bacteria already in place.

On the other hand, it activates receptors that act like a magnet for the E. coli bacterium, which then attaches to the receptors. These are expelled and then eliminated through the urine.

This study confirms its effectiveness in treating urinary tract infections. It showed an efficacy comparable to the antibiotic nitrofurantoin, used to treat bacterial infections of the urinary tract.

It prevents urinary tract infections

D-mannose cystitis
D-mannose is found in cranberry juice and certain dietary supplements.

D-mannose is not only useful as a curative treatment. It is also recommended to prevent urinary tract infections.

It is particularly useful for people most at risk of infections: pregnant or menopausal women, older adults…

As shown by this study, it prevents recurrences that are common after acute cystitis. It works without causing side effects.

It relieves symptoms

As it acts, it helps restore urinary comfort. It relieves the symptoms and discomfort caused by the infection.

It reduces the burning sensations and pain on urination. It relieves the frequent urge to urinate and the pressure in the lower abdomen.

Where to find it ?

As a dietary supplement, D-mannose is available in different forms: capsules, tablets, powder and sticks.

It is also present in the diet but in smaller amounts. It is notably found in cranberry and in certain fruits (peaches, oranges, pineapples, blueberries…).
