Qu’est-ce que l’huile de carotte ?

An oil macerate

This oil is obtained by macerating carrot roots in a vegetable oil (sunflower oil, olive oil…). More precisely, it is called an oil macerate.

This produces a yellow-orange liquid with a plant-like scent and a dry texture.

It is often sold in capsules, taken as a dietary supplement to prepare the skin for sun exposure and improve tanning. But it is also used externally and can be applied directly to the skin.

Pigments and fatty acids

Carrot oil macerate is notable for its richness in provitamin A and especially in beta-carotene. It is this carotenoid pigment that gives it its characteristic color and tanning effect.

It also contains fatty acids (omega-6 and omega-9) and vitamin E that works in synergy with beta-carotene.

It stimulates melanin production

The beta-carotene contained in the oil is able to stimulate the production of melanin. Naturally present in the body, melanin is responsible for the pigmentation and coloring of the skin.

Over repeated applications, the skin doesn’t tan more but takes on a darker hue. That’s what makes us appear more tanned.

As shown by this study, carotenoids such as beta-carotene have a direct effect on skin color.

It gives a healthy, sun-kissed complexion

Carrot oil is ideal for achieving a pretty golden tan before summer. It gives a healthy glow, a sun-kissed and even complexion.

Additionally, it adds radiance to dull, tired, and lifeless complexions. The skin looks more radiant.

It prolongs the tan

This oil is very effective at prolonging a tan. It therefore helps keep skin tanned for longer after sun exposure.

The omegas and vitamin E give it a nourishing and softening action. Nourished, more supple and elastic, the skin better maintains its bronzed and even complexion.

When applied regularly, it continues to boost melanin synthesis and skin pigmentation.

It is also a perfect after-sun treatment to hydrate the skin and soothe sunburns.

It protects against free radicals

Finally, it exerts a powerful antioxidant action. As shown by this study, beta-carotene protects the skin from free radicals generated by UV rays.

Thus, the skin is more resistant and better prepared for sun exposure. However, carrot oil does not replace applying sunscreen.

Precautions for use and recommendations

Carrot oil is only illuminating and self-tanning. It does not have anti-UV properties and does not protect against the sun’s rays. It therefore does not replace sunscreen.

Always apply sunscreen (minimum SPF 30) before any sun exposure and reapply regularly.

An excessive exposure to the sun carries real risks: skin aging, skin cancer, burns…

To keep a sun-kissed complexion even in winter, simply add 1 to 2 drops of oil to your usual cream or your body lotion. Then massage until fully absorbed.

It can also be applied undiluted to the skin. But, due to its comedogenic nature, it is not recommended for oily skin.
