Chemotherapy: the most effective dietary supplements

Mis à jour le

Chemotherapy is a medical treatment used primarily to fight cancer. It uses antineoplastic (anticancer) drugs to destroy or inhibit the growth of cancer cells. The goal may be curative, aiming to completely eradicate the disease, or palliative, aiming to reduce symptoms and prolong the patient's life. Chemotherapy can be administered alone or in combination with other treatments such as surgery or radiation therapy.

Types of Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy can be classified into different categories based on the drugs used and their mechanism of action.rnrn1) Cytotoxic agentsrnrn• Anticancer alkaloids: Mitosis inhibitors (e.g. vincristine, paclitaxel).rn• Alkylating agents: Alter DNA (e.g. cyclophosphamide, cisplatin).rn• Intercalating agents: Intercalate into DNA (e.g. doxorubicin).rn• DNA-cleaving agents: Fragment DNA (e.g. bleomycin).rn• Antimetabolites: Interfere with DNA synthesis (e.g. methotrexate, 5-fluorouracil).rnrn2) Modulating agentsrnrn• Hormonal agents: Used for hormone-dependent cancers (e.g. tamoxifen for breast cancer).rn• Kinase inhibitors: Block cell growth signals (e.g. imatinib).rnrn3) Monoclonal antibodies: Specifically target antigens on cancer cells (e.g. rituximab, trastuzumab).rnrn4) Immunomodulators: Modulate the immune response to fight cancer (e.g. thalidomide, lenalidomide).

Adverse Effects of Chemotherapy

The side effects of chemotherapy are numerous and varied depending on the drugs used:rnrn• Cutaneous and mucosal toxicity: Alopecia (hair loss), hypersensitivity.rnrn• Gastrointestinal toxicity: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.rnrn• Hematologic toxicity: Anemia, leukopenia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia.rnrn• Hepatic toxicity: Monitoring of transaminases.rnrn• Renal toxicity: Nephrotoxicity; monitoring of renal function.

Mechanism of Action

Chemotherapy drugs act mainly by targeting rapidly dividing cells, a characteristic of cancer cells:rnrn• Inhibition of Mitosis: Vinca alkaloids, such as vincristine, bind to microtubules, preventing cell division.rnrn• Alkylation of DNA: Alkylating agents add alkyl groups to DNA, preventing cell replication.rnrn• Intercalation into DNA: Anthracyclines, such as doxorubicin, intercalate into DNA strands, blocking replication.rnrn• DNA fragmentation: Bleomycin induces the formation of free radicals that fragment DNA.rnrn• Inhibition of DNA synthesis: Antimetabolites, such as methotrexate, inhibit the enzymes necessary for the synthesis of DNA bases.
