Beech: benefits, dosage, contraindications

Mis à jour le

Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is a majestic tree of the Fagaceae family that can reach between 30 and 40 meters in height. It is particularly widespread in Europe, where it adorns forests with its dense, dark green foliage. Its oval leaves, slightly wavy and fringed with hairs in spring, are arranged alternately on its branches. The fruit of the beech, the beechnut, is contained in a brown, spiny cupule. In herbal medicine, the parts of the beech generally used are its leaves and its bark. However, the buds are the most used for their therapeutic properties. They contain a multitude of active compounds, such as glutathione, flavonoids, polyphenols, hydroxyproline, tannins, sulfate and cysteine. Beech is recognized for its antiseptic, antipyretic and astringent properties. In gemmotherapy, it is particularly appreciated for its detoxifying virtues and its action on fibro-sclerotic conditions. Beech bud macerate is also reputed for its diuretic properties, which promote the elimination of toxins and waste accumulated in the body. In addition, beech has immunostimulant properties that strengthen the body's natural defenses.
